A Congregation's Story of Environmental Awareness
Temple Emanuel
Kensington, Maryland

You need only ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the sky, they will tell you; or speak with the earth it will teach you; the fish of the sea will tell you stories.

Temple Emanuel has been a leading advocate for change on the environment and global warming for 17 years – beginning on the twentieth anniversary of Earth Day. The mission is clear— to educate the congregation and the broader Jewish community about the dangers of climate change and to take action to create a green synagogue. Through the efforts of its board, clergy, staff and Green Shalom Committee, Temple Emanuel has reduced its waste, introduced numerous recycled products, planted a garden inspired by Biblical plants, and created an ark and bimah using local, sustainably grown tulip poplar trees.

Resources, informational white papers and articles of interest can be viewed and downloaded directly from Temple Emanuel's website, and include:

A message from the Co-Chairs of the Green Shalom Committee:
“We would like to extend an invitation to the members of Reform congregations throughout North America to visit and tour our synagogue. We are happy to speak with you at any time about how every synagogue can begin to make a commitment to the ecological principles of Judaism.”
